wedcropWayne Katz is a dedicated drummer, teacher and performer based in Sydney, Australia. Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, Katz was driven and inspired by the wealth of cultures that surrounded him to start playing drums over 2 decades ago. He began playing on a mattress and a basketball with 2 meat skewers found in his mother’s kitchen drawers eventually progressing onto the drum kit. Today, 20 years later, he continues to play, teach, study and love the drums.

Katz considers himself to be largely self-taught although he has taken the opportunity to study with some world class teachers. Not all of this ‘study’ has come about formally though, but rather through contact with some incredible people – Clement Benny, Efrain Toro, James Kibby & George Werner in South Africa and Catherine Clarke-Jones, Matt Bray, Sam Okoth and Elliot Orr in Australia – to name but a few…

Teaching Experience
In 2002 he began teaching at the Jazz Workshop in Cape Town (South Africa’s premier private music school est. 1965)  where he continued as resident drum teacher until 2007. During this time he taught 50+ private students each week. Many of his students have since gone on to play in successful South African bands and have taken up music as a profession.

In 2009, after a brief study break and immigration to Australia, he custom built his own teaching studio in West End, Brisbane. The studio has since continued to flourish and grow, with the incorporation of new technologies and fresh teaching approaches. By July 2014 Drum Lessons with Wayne Katz had received the highest number of positive Google reviews of any drum school or teacher in Brisbane by an overwhelming margin.

In September 2014 Katz will be relocating to Sydney to further his studies at the acclaimed Australian Institute of Music.

Gigging Experience

Katz has accumulated over 20 years of playing experience in a wide variety of genres including gigs in 9 countries on 4 continents.

“The musicians I have worked with have been extremely varied. I like to challenge myself and not stick to one particular genre.
I choose projects that allow me to express myself on the drums but I also enjoy playing a supporting role to musicians who
have something to say”

2009 – 2012 was spent mainly gigging with Dubmarine, a 9 piece Dub Reggae/Dancehall/Drum n Bass band. The group played electronic music styles, all entirely live, with a strong and positive Indigenous Australian message. Together they played some incredible shows and festivals over 3 years including a hugely successful European tour in June/July 2010. Playing to massive, enthusiastic crowds in Germany, Netherlands, Czech Republic and Belgium, the tour was a career highlight. (photo’s in the gallery). On the local scene, Dubmarine played WOMADelaide, ParklifeByron Bay Bluesfest, and  had countless appearances at Woodford Folk Festival and the Dreaming Festival during Katz’s residency with the band. Dubmarine also supported Roots Manuva (UK) on the Brisbane leg of his Australian Tour in March 2012.

Wayne has been learning and playing doun-douns (large West African drums) with Spankinhide led by Elliot Orr over the past few years.  As well as writing, rehearsing and gigging with Funk/Hip-Hop/Soul outfit Signature Series, Katz plays several sit-in gigs with various groups around Brisbane.
